“If thou must love me, let it be for nought Except for love’s sake only…”
Elizabeth Barrett Browning
Warm Greetings To All, One of my favorite stories illustrating generosity is the Parable of the Widow’s Mite. It is a Bible story from the Gospel of Mark, 12:38-44. This Parable takes place in Jerusalem where Jesus is teaching in the Temple. While there, he witnesses donations being made. In those days, it was customary to donate a silver coin and only the very poor would give a copper coin and the desperately poor would give a copper coin as small as a mite as their social status could hardly sink any lower. He observes the donations of the wealthy and the poor and is in awe of the generosity of a poor widow who gives two mites—all that she has. Naturally, there are various moral and philosophical lessons that have been discussed through the years concerning this Parable, but it is not my intent to discuss these lessons here. Instead, I simply want to share this story with you for several reasons. First, I want it to be part of a special thank you for your generosity. For whether you have donated a ‘mite’ or ‘many mites’, we thank you. Secondly, you need to know that your generous ‘mites’ will enable Action In Maturity to reach our ‘mighty’ quest to attain our Weinberg Matching Grant. We are making progress but we still need your help. See our chart on page 8. We have until June, 2010 to reach our goal of $15,000 to receive an additional $25,000 from Weinberg. We thank you for all that you do!
Sincerely and Happy Valentine’s Day,
Patricia Troy Chalfant
